Cafe Luna Open at New Location

Cafe Luna dining roomAnd what a gorgeous place it is! The former Tracks space has been remade into an intimate, comfortable, and chic bistro that serves fabulous food and drink. Take your date here; you'll earn his or her undying love. As in the cafe's former location, you don't need to dress up, but if you do, you'll feel entirely comfortable.

My friend Angie and I went last Saturday evening. And we went early (5:45). The photo above was taken at that time, when there was just one other table in the place. But soon enough, and throughout the rather long evening we spent there, it was packed. Without any advertising other than the words "Now Open" spray painted on the Coming Soon sign facing University Avenue.Full dining roomIf you've been to Luna's previous incarnation on Fourth and Green, you may be relieved to hear that the menu is very similar to what it was there: many tapas (around 40 options), a handful of entrees (six; one vegetarian), and divine desserts (7 types). Here's a sampling of some of the offerings (I'm not running down the entire menu, just trying to give you a taste, heh heh):

Tapas
Vegetable
Roasted garlic
Orange-marinated olives
Parmesan fries with truffle oil
Mushroom crostini with Gruyere and truffle oil
Whole artichoke with grainy mustard sauce

Seafood
Spring crab cakes with asparagus
Coconut shrimp with curry aioli (be sure to get this one!)
Mussels in white wine, garlic, and herbs
Seared sea scallops over sweet peas in pancetta
Shrimp scampi with artichoke hearts, olives, and goat cheese

Meat
Flank steak crostini with fig jam, arugula, and Stilton (blue) cheese
Strawberry-rhubarb pork ribs
Pesto burgers with cilantro aioli and crispy onion
Charcuterie board

Cheese
Goat cheese balls with caramelized onions and honey
Warm brie with caramelized walnuts and berries
Cheese board with domestic and imported cheeses

Salads
Arugula and tarragon with grapes, walnuts, and aged Spanish goat cheese
Beet carpaccio with minted greens, goat cheese, and herb vinaigrette

Entrees
Goat cheese and asparagus ravioli with sauteed shiitake and a sun-dried tomato and chive butter
Pancetta-wrapped filet mignon with mushroom skewers, an apple potato cake, and Morel mushroom port glaze
New England clam bake with assorted fresh seafood, local produce, and a white-wine–butter broth (I'm getting this one next time.)

Desserts
Warm flourless Ghirardelli chocolate cake with berry sauce
Gingered rose mascarpone cheesecake souffle
Lemon mousse

I know.

We sipped sangria while we perused the menu. Large glass, garnished with strawberries and oranges; lip-smacking good.SangriaMy friend and I dove off the deep end and ordered the Chef's Choice dinner, and it was thusly described by our server: "Basically, tapas keep flowing out from the kitchen to your table until you are completely satiated." Yikes! Who could resist an offer like that?! (The tapas are chosen by the chef, and the cost is $35/person.)Still life with menusI'm ashamed to tell you how many tapas we consumed. I wanted to stop, but Angie was harder to satisfy, and so we had (ahem!) 14 courses, not counting dessert. They were tiny courses, but still.

It couldn't be helped.

The first dish brought to us was ceviche scallops over creamed celeriac root with orange sections and avocado: thin slices of marinated scallop were the jewels atop this crown.CevicheNext up was a charmingly shaped dish holding two varieties of tuna tartare (spicy and herb) with a few chips. The spicy one was my favorite; it wasn't so spicy as to overpower the tuna but was deliciously zingy. Hey! It's Luna tuna!Luna tunaThen the server brought the arugula and tarragon salad, which included a couple of the mushroom crostini with aged goat cheese and truffle oil (they combined two tapas here). That's what I'm talking about! The saladNext was roasted garlic. I'm not sure what the delightful substance on the side was, but something sweet-ish. A balsamic something, perhaps.Roasted garlicThen we were made to consume the spring crab cakes with asparagus. Still with me?Crab cakesAfter that, it was two hot and crispy coconut shrimp with curry aioli.Coconut shrimpQuickly followed by the seared scallops over the sweet peas, with pancetta.Scallops and peas with pancettaPerhaps fearing that we were meat deprived, the chef then sent out the strawberry-rhubarb ribs.RibsAnd the duck ravioli.Duck ravioliAnd the skewered beef with potato gratin. And the sauteed asparagus with sun-dried tomato and chive butter (do not pass this one up). It's now getting later and darker, so photos of these two are unavailable.

Hold on—we're not giving up yet!

Apparently the light got better, or I revived myself momentarily, because I do have photos of the next courses.

The fried goat-cheese balls with caramelized onions and honey:Luna goat cheese ballsAnd I have to mention the warm Brie with caramelized walnuts and berries.BrieAlert! My presentation here is somewhat out of the order in which we received the tapas, because I know that both cheese dishes were not served back to back (and you can tell, by the light in the photo, that the Brie was served quite a bit earlier in the evening than the goat-cheese balls were)—but bear with me; the sangria was a fruity delight, it was served in a large glass (for 6 bucks—such a deal), and I had drunk two.

We were almost beaten, but we persevered! Allow me to present the seared salmon with asparagus and golden beets (the beet part is that ring of gold you may or may not be able to make out under the fish).Seared salmon tapaFinally, we finished ourselves off with lemon mousse (Angie) and pineapple sorbet (me). I had thought I might burst, but the sorbet really set me right. Sadly, I captured no photos of these two sweet treats, but I strongly encourage you to try one or both.

Is that all there is? Yes, three and one-half hours later, we were satiated. Wowie.

About the service: Good. Friendly, and knowledgeable. A couple of times the tapas came out too quickly, but overall, and for the second night in operation? Very well done.

About the prices: You're not going to get out of here cheaply. Our bill, for the two chef's special dinners, two glasses of wine each, and two desserts, was right around $100, or about $120 after tipping. The prices of the tapas ranged from $3 to $16, with most hovering around the $7 mark. So if two of you have a couple of tapas, a couple glasses of wine, and dessert, it's going to set you back around $60 to $70+, before tip. I wish I could say I'll be popping in to eat at this lovely establishment with extreme frequency, but alas, I'm neither a personal-injury lawyer nor a software developer, so it's going to be more of a special-occasion, treat-myself kind of place.Bar and flowersIn his history of renowned restaurateur Alice Waters and her revolutionary (for the time) venue, Chez Panisse, Thomas McNamee writes that the restaurant had "many small sources of light, and gilt-framed mirrors to reflect it, so that there would be a warm, seemingly sourceless glow." The kind of glow that makes "women look good in the restaurant." This is just such a place. When I gazed into the several mirrors hung near the ceiling at opposite ends of the dining room and saw the servers, the customers, the food and drink, the candles, and the flowers reflected there, I felt as if I'd been transported into a Toulouse-Lautrec painting. A good feeling, indeed—and I'm certain I looked stunning. I'll always have Luna.

P.S. You really must take a look at my friend Lek's photos of his evening at Luna. They are truly beautiful! They really capture the atmosphere and food much better than my photos do. Thanks a million for sharing, Lek.

Update 6/11/08: I went for dinner again last night with a friend who hadn't been yet. We ordered sangria, and it took quite a while to get to us (maybe ten minutes), but not so long that it ruined the evening or anything. We both also ordered the whole artichoke; that came in a timely manner, but then our entrees came while we were still working on the artichokes. So, the entrees sat while we finished. By the time I started my clam bake, it had cooled off more than I would've liked. So, the timing is still off. In addition, the clam bake turned out to be a mussels bake—the clams hadn't come in. I'm not anywhere near as fond of mussels as I am of clams, so it was disappointing, and I wished that I'd heard about the lack of clams before the entree came to me so I could've considered whether I still wanted to order that dish or not. In any case, there was lots of other seafood and fish in there (shrimp, scallops, hunks of salmon) plus manageably sized pieces of corn on the cob, and potatoes.

When our server came to clear our plates, he saw that I had left quite a few mussels, and it was clear he felt badly about the situation. He came back and offered me a free or discounted dessert (depending on which one I ordered), which I cheerfully took him up on (the lemon mousse).

My friend thoroughly enjoyed her large, delicious filet mignon topped with mushrooms and served with a side of a potato-apple concoction (sort of a pancake-y thing, very good) and some asparagus. Overall, we had a great time, what with the atmosphere, the music, and so forth, and it was a gorgeous evening weather-wise. The side patio looked magical; tiny white lights in the bushes, candles on the tables—and all of the outside tables were full.

Some friends passed our table on their way out of the restaurant, as we were finishing up. They raved about their tapas and didn't say anything about problems with the service.

I'm hopeful that with a little more time, they'll work out the timing of the dishes coming out of the kitchen and they'll sharpen up the service in general. It will be a shame if they don't, because Luna has the potential to be a star-quality bistro.

I'm trying to figure out how I can eat the fried goat cheese balls off my computer monitor. They probably wouldn't ship very well to North Carolina, would they?
I wish Luna all the best in their new location! They have a great thing going. Thanks for such a wonderful report, Lisa. We appreciate the sacrifice of 14 courses all for the sake of the blog!

Ate there Friday night as well. Soft opening if there ever was one, at some point in the day they just changed the sign to "now open". The chef gave me a tour the day before when I stopped by to see when it would be open, and I made a res. Omg the throngs - had to wait for a table for some time, luckily was in no hurry. The space is lovely, and with all those people it was not too loud. The servers were slammed but did their best. Luckily some of the menu faves are still there - I am always a sucker for the coconut shrimp, and the spareribs in strawberry-rhubarb sauce - heavenly! Got my usual duck confit ravioli, it was wonderful. Aaron came out from the kitchen to a huge round of applause. Looking forward to going back in a few weeks, midweek, after things have died down a bit. Still voerall the best food in town I think.

Do they have "Chef's Choice dinner" everyday?

I would really like to try it right away.

Hi Glamah: Thanks! It was great.

PIC: Hey, that's an idea -- a Luna franchise!

Alyson: One does have to make these sacrifices, but it's worth it. I knew you would like the cheese balls; sorry you weren't there to dig in with us!

Anon: Thank you for sharing your story! It was fun to read. I wish I'd been there for the applause! That's fantastic drama.

Yeah, Cynthia!

lbotp: I hear you. I'm thinking lunch, too.

Lek: Yes, the campus location is closed; that building is going to be torn down soon. And yes, the Chef's Choice dinner is printed on the menu, so it's available nightly, along with the other offerings. Go for it! You'll get much better photos than I can manage, I know that. And I think you'll really enjoy the tapas.

I tried it today Lisa. Everything went very well at the beginning, and the food got served very slow in the end (probably due to lots of customers).

We had some similar dishes, but I did not get scallops, pork ribs, and duck ravioli at all. Your ceviche scallops made me craving for trying the restaurant immediately :(

Many of my dishes were crostini-based with different toppings like mini-burger, so they did not look as promising as yours.

I still love this new restaurant though :)

PS. I will update some photos soon :)

I just loved looking at them and re-experiencing the whole thing. Thanks again. And I see you had my favorite: the fried artichokes and beets. We ate at Luna for an early lunch today. The food was great - the sauce on the salmon was wonderful and the crushed potato with the tuna was great.

Things weren't quite perfect yet (there was a bit of paper towel mixed with the greens in the salad, and the tuna was done right - medium rare - but it seemed like it had cooled more than I would have expected.

I expect we'll get back often.

[Lisa: you can get rid of the blue cast in your pictures by adjusting the color temperature, which is pretty easy in the basic photo tools on Macs, at least. I played with a couple of your images and they look much more appetizing with a little adjustment.]

Thanks, Scott, for the comments and the photo suggestions. I think I might have forgotten to adjust the setting for what kind of light you're in; doing that usually produces much better photos. Also, I don't have Photoshop or other image-editing app., so my photos are always gloriously unretouched! I might poke around on my computer and see if I have any editing stuff that I haven't been aware of.

Your dinner sounds good. They are undoubtedly still working some kinks out, this first week in operation, in terms of service and getting the food out; the owner told me that this new place is twice the size of the old restaurant.

I had a terrible experience there last night. Our service was awful.

We ordered a few tapas plates, drinks and entrees. After our tapas and drinks arrived, we waited an hour before we even saw our server again. Our plates had been cleared, and our drinks were empty. (And I should add that several of our plates/glasses were hastily cleared without our permission and before we had finished their contents.)

Our server had clearly forgotten about us and our entree orders, but NEVER apologized or acknowledged the poor service. It took us another 30 minutes to get our check. The whole experience was infuriating. We paid $100, got hastily-prepared entrees and received the worst service I think I've ever experienced.

We ate there on Saturday and the service was disappointing. We had reservations and were seated quickly but waited a full 20 minutes before anyone came to bring menus or take our drink order. We had to go through 4 requests on the wine list before we came across one that was actually available. The dish I had my heart set on was unavailable. Our waiter set our plates down and didn't check on us again until after everything was cleared. The food was very good, but it was not a good dining experience.

We really enjoyed eating at the old location and hope these are just growing pains.

lisa, as always, I love reading your blog and definitely use it as a guide in making all of the dining out selections for my friends and i. i've also tried a few of the recipes you share. I am excited about Luna in the new location. I think they will do only good things in the new space.

to those who have experienced poor service----do go back to luna maybe in a month or two, I am absolutely positive they'll work out these kinks!! A good friend of mine used to work there so i got to know the staff pretty well a few years ago and i believe they always try to hire people who ABSOLUTELY COMMITTED to the whole dining experience...they just need some time to adjust to the larger space.

As for me, I'm looking forward to trying it out this weekend. Do you know if they're still doing brunch in the new spaces. i've been dying for the crab cakes benedict!!!

Anon, I'm sorry to hear about the service problems. I really, really hope they can quickly figure out the larger space and get their rhythm down. I'm sure they will. Also, our server apologized about the wine situation; she said that they hadn't received many of the wines on the list from their distributor yet. Of course, it's disappointing.

Amy: Thanks for the good word on the blog! Yes, they told me that they are doing Sunday brunch (but not dinner, apparently). And I also know that the owner is committed to great food and service. I'm sure they'll get the kinks worked out.

My wife and I just got home from eating dinner at Cafe Luna. Unfortunately, it was the worst 3.5 hours we've ever spent in a restaurant.

We arrived early, well before the restaurant was busy. I ordered a draft beer and waited 10 minutes to receive it. When it arrived the server said something to the effect of "you're going to be the only one drinking this beer tonight, there must be something wrong with the CO2"... it was fine, but are you trying to tell me it's bad?

We went with the chef's choice (no explanation of how many courses), which has had a price increase. The food pace was very off. We'd get two on top of one another and then wait 30 minutes. Our waitress would come back and ask in a rude tone "Are you still hungry?"

Yes! Either bring us X courses or let us tell you to stop.

When I finished my beer, she never even asked if I wanted another, let alone something else. She didn't bring more bread, which was unfortunate with all the nice sauces.

The food was pretty good, but it was the most uncomfortable, unpleasant, unwelcoming restaurant experience I've ever had. Perhaps anonymous and I had the same waitress.

Blogger Lisa said...

Jason, I'm so sorry to hear of your experience. I can understand off timing, as the place is still adjusting to the bigger space, but the attitude of the server I can't understand at all! I also am saddened by the bad service. I mean, the server can't make the dishes come out of the kitchen any faster/slower than they do, but s/he can certainly bring more bread, offer drinks, provide explanations, and so on, to make the dining experience a good one. At fine-dining prices, stellar service is a must.

I have plans to visit again this week; I'll report on how it goes.

I went last night as well, but was somewhat disappointed. As stated by a previous poster, the price on the chef special is now $45. My husband and I ordered it anyways thinking that it would be well worth it. The experience started off well but quickly turned sour. We were given our first three tapas, right away. We then had to wait 10-15 minutes for each dish thereafter. We were only given 10 dishes total (substantial for me but left wanting more for my husband) when we were told that was the last dish. I felt bad for my husband who still looked hungry. So we ordered dessert. The napolean came out looking fresh and delicious...but then became unappetizing when we noticed the ants that accompanied it. We waved our waiter over...but alas he was busy talking to the other wait staff. After 15 minutes he approached our table, we asked for the check, had to wait another 10 minutes before another waitress came over. I told her about the ant problem and then left. All in all, the ambiance is beautiful, the food is good, but the service is lacking and we were left wanting.

6/11/2008
Blogger Lisa said...

Sarah: You know, I think they should just say that the chef's special is X number of courses and leave it at that. I understand about the timing; we had some of that, too (several dishes coming at once, then nothing for a bit). The ant thing is a shame! Yikes. I agree that it's pricey and that the service and timing must improve dramatically.

We finally got in there last week. I had unfortunately eaten a HUGE lunch, so when picked up from work with "Let's go to Luna, I'm starving!"...Darn, not even hungry. I had the goat cheese balls and the duck ravioli and a couple glasses of a Spanish red. I almost had to be rolled out of there. Mistercat had the tuna entree, which was perfectly done, but wasn't quite enough for his hungry state. We'll go back when we're on the same page appetite-wise. Our service was just fine. The server was very young but quite capable. The food is first-rate and the service will fall into the proper rhythm very soon, let's hope.

Kidcat strolled in there this afternoon to inquire about possible employment.....he starts busing tables today at 5! How 'bout that? (Now we'll definitely be going back). Watch out for the ginger-hair busboy!

I recently ate there with my girlfriend this past Friday. The food was delicious. The tapas were wonderful and the different tastes were a nice treat from the bland food I normally eat around town. We especially liked the fried goat cheese with honey. Also winners were the crab cakes and an asparagus dish (I love asparagus, so I'm biased). The sangria was delicious! The service was good and our tapas came out in a timely manner. The waiter was extremely friendly and suggested most of what we ate. I will definitely be going back! I saw "spring" on the menu, so maybe the summer menu will be there soon?

I tried out the new Luna a few weeks ago and was not impressed. While the interior is lovely, the dinner service was lackluster and the food not that good. My flank steak crostini was cold and barely toasted. The pesto burgers were way, way overcooked (and the waitress never did ask me how I wanted them). My girlfriend had the duck special and was underwhelmed as well; the duck was overcooked and there were too many showy flavors on her plate). Overall it felt like the emphasis on "fancy" presentation really detracted from the quality of the food.

Slanderous: This is not going to be your favorite spot, is it?! Sounds like there were definitely problems with the preparation of a couple of your dishes, and it's too bad about the service. I'm thinking it will be worth another try some time down the road, when they figure out what is what in this new location. I've had some really excellent food there, and service as well (the service at the new location has never matched what it was at the old, so far, but I have to believe that it will in time).

I've eaten there twice now and both times have left quite disappointed. Both times were for lunch, and while I love the ambiance, the food has been just *okay.* What's really been unsatisfactory has been the service, as other posters have mentioned. Our orders were wrong on both occasions (for some reason, the kitchen keeps forgetting the avocados on dishes), and other items were left off the plates as well. Some tables seemed like they were getting plenty of attention from the wait staff, while others were virtually ignored. I'm not sure if understaffing is the problem, as our server seemed to be doing double-duty as hostess, but whatever the issues are, I certainly hope they'll get resolved soon. It's a lovely space and sounds like the right dishes are marvelous; now if only they could get the service component down right!

Ate there in early July. Overall, it was average. We'll go back. But the service was a bit strange. My wife's steak was well done despite her asking for medium. When she sent it back, she was told, "It will take some time." Well, what is "some time"? When asked, the server said, "seven minutes" which seemed reasonable. It came back in ~10 minutes delicious. But I found her attitude and response to be obnoxious, like she was trying to talk us out of sending back the food. The food overall was about what I'd expect. The service was below par. The restaurant was pretty crowded, but if this keeps up, I doubt it will remain so.

Anon: It's too bad about the "attitude" you experienced from the server. That definitely doesn't make a person feel welcome!

We were thoroughly enjoying it until I found a large, knuckle-ish bone in the Pesto burger tapas. Umm. Gross.

Anon: Uh-oh! Yikes, that's too bad. Way to freak out a diner, eh? My goodness.
