New York Style Bagels Available at Farmers' Market
Well, actually, I've known for a couple of months, I guess. Several people wrote to tell me about them and I'd seen them mentioned on other blogs and stuff. But honestly, when I heard about these bagels, my first reaction was "eh." Because, you know, so many round, roll-like products are called bagels nowadays that the word has all but lost its meaning. So I did not allow myself to get my hopes up. To my great joy, this morning I found out that these bagels are the real thing. Crispy and chewy on the outside, dense and soft on the inside. Golden-brown orbs of delight.
Doing the Atkins diet? Fuggetaboudit. You only live once. Buy these bagels and eat them, right away. You can afford to, because unlike some of the monstrous rolls that are known as bagels, these gems are small—only around 4 ounces each. So after you've eaten one, you don't feel bloated and carb-loaded, just extremely satisfied and happy. I'm telling you, I had a toasted bagel topped with cream cheese, a thin slice of a juicy, ripe Blue Moon Farm tomato, an even thinner slice of a Meyer Produce red onion, and a sprinkling of fleur de sel, and it was heaven on earth.
Have no fear.
- One: There are still two more weeks of the outdoor market left. I got bagels today, which means that the bagels will be there again on November 8 (you'll find them in the fourth row).
- Furthermore, after the market moves inside Lincoln Square (on November 15), the bagel makers will be there every week through December 20.
- Finally: You can call or e-mail Stewart and order them from him directly—throughout the winter.
You can do it! You can have the bagels of your dreams!
I should mention also that Stewart makes not only bagels but a variety of other bakery products. Some of the many offerings include white or wheat sourdough bread, rye sourdough, olive-rosemary bread, chipotle-artichoke sourdough, English muffin bread, cinnamon rolls, and pecan sticky buns. And fruit bars. And pies. And tarts. And so on. And so forth.

This post is dedicated to Ms. LBOTP, self-professed bagel snob. LBOTP, I hope you are well, I wish you all the best, and I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I think even you might love these bagels.

Their granola is extremely good.
I miss real bagels! When I lived closer to the City we got beautiful authentic ones. Now, out here near the sticks they fail miserably. I've been spoiled ;)
Arggh! Two weeks of waiting?! Really, posting on Nov. 6th or something would have been kinder. ;-)
aaaaaawwwwwwwwwww Yeahhhhh!!!!
Stewart told me you'd been by. How come we've never met!?
Love the granola bars. They are total breakfast on Market days.
We buy 4 bags of bagels at a time. I turned my friend on to the bagels and she's been known to purchase ::gulp:: 6 bags at a time.
Word's starting to get out about Stewart. His bagels were a topic of discussion on Sunday's last dinner at Prairie Fruits...
So THAT'S what fleur de sel is! I've had a container of it all these years and had no idea. Thanks!
I want that exact bagel for breakfast right now, juicy tomato, cream cheese, red onion, fleur de sel - oh Lisa, a perfect bagel!
Kfan, good tip on the granola, thanks.
Maryann: I feel your pain.
Kris: Sorry about that!
Bellenoelle: Glad I made your day.
Market lady: I don't know why! Thanks for the tip on the granola bars. But why are you and your friends hogging all the bagels?!
P@: Glad to be of service!
Lori Lynn, it's true. The only thing better would have been a slice of lox on it, as well. ;)
I should try this one!!! I never taste delicious bagels in my life.
These might be the best bagels in town, but I can't get over the fact that they call them New York style.
As an east-coast native, I've never seen bagels as plump and round as Stewart's. Maybe I will give them a try one of these days, but I would much rather they call them "freshly baked bagels" or something.
For now, I will just stick to the incredibly tasty Farmer's Market English muffins.
Anon, if you give them a try, let me know what you think. And I heartily agree about the English muffins!
Thanks for writing about these! I'm a recent transplant from NYC and have been looking for good bagels here. I picked up a bag of these plain bagels this morning and tore into one as soon as I got in the car.
While they aren't exactly like NY bagels, they have a really nice flavor, and the chewiness that NY bagels are known for. I'm loving them! Just ate one with some fried eggs - not quite a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich from the deli but it's definitely hitting the spot! Thank you!
SMDNY: Welcome to the Midwest! I hope you get acclimated quickly and enjoy your time here. Glad you liked the bagels. I got the sesame ones this week—yum. No eggs for me; I did my usual red onion, tomato, and salt. Creature of habit.
Got my bagels (plain) Saturday, and they were wonderful (yep, gone already). Dense, chewy, and tasty. Nice crust, esp. when toasted. I'm very happy. Thanks for the post. Impending winter in C-U now seems less bleak.
Hi Kris, I'm so glad you found them and liked them! I hear you about winter; we need all the help we can get to make it through.
hurray! for bagels in Champaign! Plus the baker across the aisle from Stewart's in Lincoln Square has a wonderfully delightful Russian dark bread (no really--it's dense enough to feel like dwarfstar alloy, but it's fanf-ingtastic and has chocolate in it. Plus it stays relatively fresh. Put some fresh butter on it. Really good at $3.75.
GH, thanks for the tip on more yummy breads at the holiday market. I love dark breads; Stewart's dark rye is fabulous.
Are these still available through the winter?
I just got back from trying to score breakfast at Cafe K (formerly Bagelmans), which permanently closed on Nov. 24.
Will someone please take over that space and make me some real water bagels please!
Hi Musebrarian: Yes, you can get bagels from Stewart every Saturday through December 20 at the farmers' market inside Lincoln Square (8 a.m. to 1 p.m.). After that, you can call in your order to Stewart (and I think he'll be able to arrange to bring the bagels and other items to town—he lives in Mahomet). Just give him a call, or talk to him on Saturday at the market, and he'll give you the details.
It's too bad about Cafe K. I can't believe I never got in there, and I live pretty close to the place.
Can someone out there verify that these bagels are the real deal "water" bagels like Bagelman's/Cafe K used to make? Thank you!
Hi Anon: Yes, these are real water bagels, and they are yummy. You can call Stewart to order and work out pickup (his wife comes into town every day), now that the market is closed for the season. He's been making poppyseed, salt, and sesame in addition to plain, and I think he does whole grain, too—not sure about that last.
Do they still have these? I would love to get my hands on a New York style bagel.
Hi Ernie: Stewart is not selling at the market this year, but you can contact him at the email address or phone in this post to see about getting some. He's still baking and taking orders, just not selling at the market.
