And the cow rocketed over the moon. You gotta love the Ben & Jerry's ice cream names and package designs, don't you? The
Beadgal tweeted about this new flavor the other day, and as soon as I saw the name, I knew it was for me, because I'm a real fan of the deliciously rich almond concoction known as
marzipan. My estimable better half picked this up for me at Schnucks in Champaign (and I'm sure it's carried at other groceries in town as well).

Bits of almond cookies (actually, more like crumbs of almond cookies; I wish there were larger chunks of cookie in there) and a thick, gooey ribbon of bittersweet almondy goodness—nice idea. This won't be everyone's favorite flavor, but if you crave marzipan, I think you'll like it.
P.S. If you like
marzipan fruit candy, I saw it recently at World Harvest market on University Avenue.

oooh, thanks for the heads up on this flavor. i can't wait to try it. ben & jerry's is definitely a weakness. :)
That does look delicious. :) I love almonds and vanilla.
Slightly off topic, but related to frozen desserts - do you (or anyone) know where one can find Skinny Cow around here? I've had no luck so far, but I haven't exhausted all options with regularity.
Skinny Cow products (not sure if it's the whole line) are available at Schnucks.
^^ Thank you!
(sorry to hijack)
Marzipan shaped as fruit is a big tradition in Palermo: la frutta di martorana is mentioned in the wikipedia entry for marzipan that you quote. A bit too sweet for my taste, but certainly beautiful to look at.
Nom nom nom!!!! If you are a fan of almond paste, I also suggest the almond danish from Mirabelle - not the very similar looking croissant, but the danish.
I just finished my Skinny Cow fudgesicle, which is really good and not bad for you. The Ben & Jerry's Mission to Marzipan is definitely not good for you but is really really good for an occasional decadent treat. In addition to Mirabelle's almond danish, I highly recommend Art Mart's almond croissants. They are generous with the almond filling.
If it's Ben and Jerry's, I'm game. Lisa, for your blogs sake, you should go to their factory store in Vermont and blog about it! :)
Do you know about these ice cream products with fish protein?

isn't it amazing? I find it satisfies w/o having to eat a ton of it. so yummy!
Ooo, Carmel - that would be great! :)
Thanks, everyone, for the comments!
Elizabeth: Yep, like Anonymous, I've seen Skinny Cow at Schnucks, too, and also at Strawberry Fields, I think.
Simona, that's so interesting, about the marzipan fruit being big in Palermo. I missed that in the Wikipedia article and will have to look again.
Anon: Thanks for the tip on Mirabelle's almond Danish. We really like their cheese Danish, but have never tried the almond. Next on the list!
Julia, thanks for the tip on the Art Mart almond croissants; don't think I've had one of those, either (have I been living under a rock?). And I must also say I don't believe that full-fat ice cream is bad for a person. Well, maybe if you eat a half-gallon a day or something, but otherwise...
Carmel, what a brilliant suggestion! Let me know when you have my plane tickets and hotel reservations in order. But seriously, folks, yes that would be a fun trip to make sometime.
Raven: How interesting, I did not know.
Beadgal, I hear you on that. Thanks again for pointing the stuff out to me.
You also should try the Morning Cup on Race Street across from the Courier Cafe. It is a coffee shop, and they have amazing sandwiches, on rolls made in the store (try the swiss cheese roll), and also home made gelato. I had the pistachio today; it was fantastic. They will give you a generous portion to taste.
Meijer has Skinny Cow items (at least the one in Urbana does, don't know if the one in Champaign has them or not)
