Mas Amigos Lunch Specials
Update: As of yesterday afternoon, the road work is finished and Springfield Avenue is open again. So this post is already out of date. But you should still go to Mas, anyway. And now you won't have any trouble getting to its parking lot. ~Lisa
A quick note to let you know that Mas Amigos, the Mexican restaurant on Springfield Avenue (next to the old Euro-Mart, just east of the Neil Street viaduct), could use some TLC. You know all that road work being done on Springfield? Well it's messing with their business. I was there yesterday for lunch, and my waiter told me that they're getting much less business than usual on account of that work. I know it's a hassle, but if you like Mas, or you've been wanting to try the place out, now is the time to go in and see them.
You can't get there on Springfield from Neil, but you can get into their parking lot from the east. There are the big "road closed" signs just west of First, but that's only for through traffic; if you want to visit one of the businesses between First and Neil via Springfield, you can, if you go from the east.
Here's a shot of the #2 lunch special combo: a chile relleno and a taco. It comes with, as you can see, beans and rice, and it'll only set you back $5.50. And there are many other lunch specials to choose from, in addition to the rest of the regular menu. You may remember how I raved about their tortas in an earlier report on the place. And their green sauce. The guac is good, too. I always order a side of it to dip chips in and just generally spread around, willy-nilly.
The staff is friendly, food and prices are great, and if you haven't been there for a while, check out the murals inside and the new air conditioning system. Very nice, casual spot for lunch or dinner. If you're so inclined, go in and say hola.

I love their lunches! The enchiladas are yummy too - but I think I will try this one next time. Their chips are so great and the green sauce is something I want to eat with a spoon (or just squirt directly into my mouth). Thanks for the directions and reminder they can use some love right now. Hmmm... should I go TODAY or TOMORROW?! Another great point is that you can get in and out very quickly at lunch and get back to work (nice at a sit down meal) or linger over ice tea.
We don't get there for lunch a lot, but we do dinner reasonably often. Very friendly, excellent food, not expensive. Great combination.
$5.50 for a lunch special is great. I haven't been there since we got a Mexican restaurant in LeRoy, but I did like Mas Amigos very very much.
Their tacoritas are super yummy! Nice and simple and delicious.
Definitely the best Mexican food in town! I go there a few times a week.
Springfield is OPEN! Just drove down it.
Fern's mom: I hear you. And good point about getting in and out quickly at lunch time; I had meant to mention that myself.
drmagoo: Agreed!
Rayne, I'd like to try that place in LeRoy sometime.
Lisa, what is a tacorita??
Fern's: Thanks for the update. I had no idea it would be finished so soon, but for their sake I'm sure glad.
That's a good looking chile relleno. I judge Mexican restaurants by how good they make a chile relleno. Ever since I moved away from Champaign, more and more good restaurants have been popping up. Oh well, I'll just live vicariously through your blog :)
Love this place. Love the green avocado sauce stuff. Hope the construction didn't knock them too much off their feet; how frustrating.
Lisa, you wrote another great post. I was in there during the construction (which seemed to last forever) and it was definitely not as busy as usual for lunch.
Hopefully now that construction is over they'll be "back in business" and getting their same packed house. Thanks for reminding me to visit!
I'm here practically every Friday for lunch with my co-workers. Lisa, if you're still asking chefs for recipes, I'd love to be able to duplicate the red sauce on their chile rellenos. It's sublime.
Thanks for the comments, all.
kayakgal, I'll try to get that recipe for you.
This place is dangerously addictive! I've been 5 times since you made this post, twice with the wife and three times with different co-workers! I have two problems with Mas Amigos. My first being they bring the food so fast that I don't have time to stuff myself with the rockin chips, salsa and green sauce. The second is the chili rellenos/taco lunch special is so good I've had nothing else. We're going this weekend and I will force myself to try something else, perhaps the carne asada with grilled poblanos!
Dave, thanks for the report. Glad you found Mas' food to your taste. The carne asada you plan to try sounds very good, but I know what you mean; it's hard to make a switch when you find something you love!
